5 Movie Remakes That Actually Succeeded
Many think that some of their favorite movies are originals when, in fact, these are already remakes of old films first featured decades ago. Many popular titles were actually derived from previously successful films.
The availability of state-of-the-art technology, as well as creative writers and set designers, made these remakes just as excellent, if not better, than the original.
1. "Parent Trap"
The 1998 romantic comedy film starred Lindsay Lohan. The movie is a remake of the 1961 film of the same title, which was highly influenced by the novel and 1936 movie "Three Smart Girls." Lohan plays a dual role of twin girls who plan to bring back together their divorced parents.
2. "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"
The 2005 film directed by Tim Burton is a remake of the 1971 film "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory." Plans for the remake started in 1991. The film is based on the 1964 British book written by Roald Dahl. The collaboration of Burton and main actor Johnny Depp, aside from being a popular children's story, is one of the big reasons why the movie became a box office success, raking $450 million worldwide.
3. "The Stepford Wives"
The 2004 science fiction movie is a remake of the 1972 satirical thriller of the same name. The later version was directed by Frank Oz and starred Nicole Kidman and Matthew Broderick. The story revolves around a couple who moves into a suburb in Connecticut called Stepford where they discover weird truths about the place and its wives.
4. "King Kong"
The 2005 epic adventure is a remake of the 1933 film. The new version featured Jack Black and Naomi Watts. The story revolves around a legendary giant gorilla living in Skull Island. An ambitious filmmaker, played by Jack Black, planned to capture and showcase the beast in New York City, with devastating results.
5. "Godzilla"
The 2014 science fiction movie is a remake of the 1998 monster film of the same name. The old version starred Matthew Broderick and was a box office hit. The later version was directed by Gareth Edwards and starred Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Kate Olsen and Ken Watanabe among others. It was also a box office success, raking in $520 million worldwide. The story is about an ancient giant reptile called "Godzilla."
