Some people deal with persistent dandruff and may have tried several commercial solutions to no avail. There are actually homemade products that will help get rid of the problem and give you a healthy scalp permanently.

Here are five natural remedies to dandruff.

1. Vinegar

Prepare one-half cup of water and one-half cup of apple cider or white vinegar. Mix both into a cup then pour over your hair and scalp. Scrub your hair and scalp with your fingers or brush for about 10 minutes then rinse everything with tap water. Do not shampoo your hair in the next 12 hours. Do the process once a week to prevent clogging the pores in your scalp.

2. Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil is effective in moisturizing your scalp and has antifungal properties, thereby preventing premature death of cells and tissues in the area. One study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology showed that shampoos containing five percent tea tree oil significantly improved the condition of people with dandruff.

3. Baking soda

Prepare one tablespoon of baking soda, one cup of water and a few drops of rosemary oil. Mix the ingredients together then apply on your hair and scalp. The formula will be a great alternative to shampoo, containing natural oil and antifungal agents that prevent dandruff buildup. Use three times per week and observe how your scalp produces natural oils that prevent dryness.

4. Coconut oil

You can get coconut oil at a grocery store or health shop. Before taking a shower, apply three to five tablespoons of the oil on your scalp. Massage the oil into the skin and let it stay for one hour. Shampoo your hair afterwards. The oil contains vitamins that nourish your skin and prevent dryness and flaking.

5. Aspirin

Aspirin contains salicylic acid, which is the same active ingredient found in medicated anti-dandruff shampoo. One study published in P&T Journal showed that salicylic acid is effective in treating mild to moderate dandruff among individuals. Crush two aspirins then add to your regular shampoo. Apply on your scalp and leave for two minutes before rinsing with water.

Of course, if the dandruff is severe, it may need consultation with a skincare professional, who can better give a more specific type of treatment for your unique condition. Do you know of any other household life hacks to beat it? Tell us in the comments!
