5 Reasons Why Australians Love Beer
The latest review by the World Health Organization (WHO) of worldwide drinking patterns rated Australia in the top 15, tied in at 14th place with Croatia and France. The report showed that Australians above 15 years old drink an average of 12.2 liters of pure alcohol or 480 beers every year. Although a WHO report showed associated risks that come with long term high alcohol consumption, more Australians love beer for a number of reasons.
1. It is considered tradition
Beer was introduced in Australia by British colonizers and ever since, brewing families handed down their home recipes from generation to generation. Cascade Brewery is the oldest brewery that was opened in 1824 and is still operational today. There are several other oldest breweries that have grown much in popularity through the decades.
2. It has the best lager
Australians particularly love lager among other types of beer. Many breweries boast of producing the best-tasting lager. Foster's Lager has become an international brand through the years and became one of the best-selling beers in the world. Australia is also famous for its stouts and stubbies, or small-sized bottles.
3. It is a simple way to unwind
Australians are known for being more laid back compared to Westerners, which is why many make it a habit to drop by a bar on the way home or down a bottle or two over dinner or before going to bed. Australians like a good conversation over an ice cold beer to eliminate stress.
4. They start young
Many Australians start tasting or drinking beer when they begin adolescence or at about 12 to 15 years of age. People 15 years old and over regularly drink beer several times a month. They get to acquire the taste at a young age, making them keener to the specific flavours and strengths they like.
5. They hold brewing contests
A lot of families and breweries in Australia continue to improve the taste and quality of their homebrews and feature their creations at events like the Australian International Beer Awards and the Sydney Royal Beer and Cider Show. During these events, breweries showcase their best produce to win the coveted awards.
