A tropical cyclone can cause damage to property and even loss of lives. Every year, many countries are destroyed by this natural calamity but thanks to technology, people are warned ahead of time so they can make the necessary preparations. But what happens afterwards? In order to help you, here are five strategies towards recovery after a tropical cyclone.

  1. Assess damages

After the cyclone struck, carefully check your house. Be very cautious in doing so because there may be broken tree branches, loose pieces of roofing, shattered glasses, and other damages around you. Check what parts of the house needs repairs or replacements.

  1. Make a plan

Once you’ve assessed the damages, it’s time to plan out your next move. Make a list of the things you need to do as well as materials you have to buy. Learn to prioritize by repairing the part of the house that needs to be fixed right away. Then you can proceed to minor things.

  1. Seek help

It’s difficult to look for a carpenter during this time because he is doing some repairs at his own place. You can work on some minor fixes here and there as long as you know how to do so. However, never attempt to do something you know you’re not capable of. Wait for a professional to help you.

  1. Provide assistance

Helping others is also one way to recover from the effects of a cyclone. You can offer a hand to your neighbours by helping them in fixing damages in their houses. You can also help by cleaning up the streets especially if there are many uprooted trees or branches blocking the paths.

  1. Talk it off

It’s only normal to feel stressed out after a cyclone. Aside from the fact that your body is totally spent on all the preparations before and during the time it hit, you are also emotionally tired. Talking about what happened with your family members or friends can help ease the pains and stress. There are also government offices and private organizations that conduct stress debriefing activities. Join one so you can be relieved from all the torture your body has been through.

Cyclones come and go but their effects can last a lifetime. These are just of the strategies you can apply towards recovery after a tropical cyclone devastated your place.
