The 5:2 diet is becoming more popular among individuals aiming to lose weight. The approach is based on "The Fast Diet," a British bestseller that focuses on intermittent fasting. Some people claim that they experienced quick weight loss results by getting on the diet. Experts also say that the diet plan enhanced longevity and minimised the risk for heart disease.

1. Why it is called 5:2

The approach recommends that individuals lower their caloric intake for two non-consecutive days then eat normally for five days. During the five non-fasting days, people can eat anything they desire, even high fat and sugary food, provided that these total the average recommended daily caloric intake of 2000.

2. The limit

During the two fasting days, individuals are required to consume only 500 calories (for women) and 600 calories (for men). The average recommended daily intake is actually 1500 to 2000 calories, so the lowered caloric intake will help people reduce excess weight as the body burns fat due to low availability of calories for energy on the fasting days.

3. It is convenient

Compared to traditional dieting which requires individuals to fast or lower their caloric intake daily for a span of two to four months, the 5:2 Diet only requires people to control their eating two days a week, which experts say is more practical and attainable.

4. What to eat

There is no caloric limit during the five-day non-fasting period. However, individuals are advised to eat a balanced meal to achieve faster weight loss. During the two-day diet period, individuals are advised to divide their meals into two each day. A breakfast consisting of ham, two scrambled eggs and coffee amounts to about 300 calories. A lunch consisting of grilled fish or chicken and vegetables also total 300 calories.

5. It provides health benefits

A number of experts stated that intermittent fasting produces health benefits that can help people live longer and prevent disease. Some of the illnesses that can be prevented by the 5:2 Diet include cancer, heart disease and stroke. The diet is also said to lower cholesterol levels and control blood sugar.
