While parents, the academic community and people in general continued to be shocked by the Connecticut school massacre over the weekend, which resulted in the death of more than 20 schoolchildren, it was not the worst in history.

However, even if the Saturday massacre, which killed 27 people, mostly first-graders, the assailant's mother, the mass murderer Adam Lanza and school officials, it considered the second worst in U.S. history after the Virginia Tech massacre in 2007.
AP reports that Mr Lanza broke the school door open, which prompted school psychologist Mary Sherlack and Principal Dawn Hochsprung to run toward him, which led Mr Lanza to gun them down. A teacher attempted to hide some students in a bathroom or closet and shield them from the bullets.
Reports said his mother, Nancy, was a teacher at the school and the young victims were mostly her students. Police investigators found two guns and estimated there were at least 100 rounds fired.
The incident prompted U.S. President Barack Obama to deliver an almost four-minute emotional statement.
