A farmer suffered fractured ribs after an 800-kilogram bull attacked him in a rage Tuesday.

The farmer, a 60-year-old man from North Canterbury in New Zealand, reportedly told St John hospital that the bull had first snorted at him before giving him a devious look and charging in rage over to the fence.

Christchurch Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called in to rush the bull victim to the hospital. The bull attack happened at a property in Loburn Whiterock Rd.

"The bull charged and rammed him from behind and pushed him up against the fence," a St John spokesperson told the media, noting that the farmer was lucky to have avoided serious injuries.

The man survived the enraged bull's attack with only some scratches, fractured ribs and other moderate injuries.

The hospital spokesperson said the story would have been very different if the farmer was alone when the attack took place. At least two other men were in the scene when the bull got in a rage, and they were able to distract the animal.

Those who helped the farmer had immediately called for help, and the bull's victim was taken by a helicopter to the Christchurch Hospital's emergency department.

"Luckily, his brother and his workmate were also there and managed to distract the bull and get it off him,'' the spokesperson said, adding, ''It would have been a different story if he was by himself. He was very lucky his injuries weren't worse."

The man is now reportedly recovering well.
