60-year-old woman dies in Perth, 2nd fatal victim of shark attack in 1 week
A drone video on the third week of May showed 70 sharks feasting on a dead humpback whale in Western Australia showed how fierce and hungry the sharks are. If they could devour large sea creatures, attacking and eating humans are apparently easier targets for the sharks.
It explains the spate of shark attacks in the country the past few days with two female victims within less than one week. Time reports that the second victim is a 60-year-old woman who died on Sunday after she suffered from significant injuries consistent with shark attack after a dive in Perth. Her body was found two kilometres off Mindarie Beach, between One and Three Mile Reefs before Sunday noon, reports Daily Telegraph.
Although there is no official confirmation yet if it a shark caused the woman’s death, the Department of Fisheries treats the incident as a fatal shark incident, says Western Australia’s “Shark Smart” website. The suspect is an almost 10-foot white shark, based on the nature of the woman’s injuries and where the attack happened.
Right after the incident, the director general of the department ordered the immediate deployment of the capture gear on the same day, but no shark was caught. On Monday, the department officials would reset the shark capture gear on Monday near the site of the attack which is about one kilometre offshore from Mindarie marina, according to the website.
After the attack, the city of Wanneroo closed the beach which would remain that way until Monday. The closure order covers beaches from both sides of the Mindarie Boat Ramp, south from Claytons Beach and Surf Spot and north to Quinns Beach.
