A study by Australian comparison Web site lifeinsurancefinder.com.au found that jobs in the trucking, postal and warehousing sectors were the most dangerous. The basis of the finding was 65 transport and storage workers were killed while on the job in the past 12 months.

For the same year, 2012, there were 8,450 serious injury compensation claims filed by employees in the same industry. The 65 fatalities accounted for 29 per cent of all workplace deaths that year.

Explaining their findings, Michelle Hutchison, money expert at finder.com.au said in a statement, "Many Australian workers have to drive vehicles or lift things as part of their job, and they may not realise how dangerous their work can be. The most common serious claim for all industries was muscular stress while lifting, carrying or putting down objects, and the most common fatality was vehicle incidents."

She said that employees in those industries must take extreme caution while on the job and must have a worst-case scenario in place.

In second place is the agriculture, forestry and fishing sector with 53 deaths and 3,815 serious injury claims, while in third place is the construction sector with 30 deaths and 12,485 injuries.

Other jobs high on the list are in retail, followed by professional, scientific and technical services which include engineers, analysts, lawyers, accountants and web developers.

Hutchison said that part of planning for the unexpected it to have an emergency fund of savings or to compare life insurance and income protection policies. These contingency measures make a big difference in the quality of life of a worker or his family if something bad happens to the employee while on the job.
