66th Cannes Festival 2013: Steven Spielberg and Ang Lee, of Admiration over Competition
Steven Spielberg is the president of the jury at the 66th Cannes Film Festival 2013 and is leading other members of the jury namely, Ang Lee, Nicole Kidman, Daniel Auteuil, Vidya balan, Naomi Kawase, Cristian Mungiu, Lynne Ramsay and Christoph Waltz.
During the press conference for the Cannes Festival 2013 on Wednesday, Spielberg and Ang was put in the spotlight as the press asks about their working relationship. The press might have expected cold shoulder treatment between the two gentlemen as Ang won the Oscar over Spielberg.
But, Spielberg denies that offense was taken between him and Ang. He said that "Ang and I have been friends for a long time and we've never been competitors. We've always been colleagues and that will just continue. And certainly I worship Life of Pi and therefore I worship Ang Lee as well."
Ang Lee, on the other hand, expresses mutual admiration to Spielberg saying that "I don't think any result would change how I feel about him or even myself. He's my hero."
And since the Oscar emerges from the interview with the two renowned directors, Spielberg makes an honest comparison between the two festivals, Oscars and Cannes. He said that "It's such a relief that we are going to be seeing movies... and we don't have to go through the campaigning. There's always campaigning for the Oscar election."
As for the 66th Cannes festival, he explains what he means by "breath of fresh air". He says that "My opinion is very straightforward, we are always judging, we are constantly judging films we see at the cinema, evaluating them and trying to see what is radically new in them. Films are always in competition with each other for audiences' attention."
Meanwhile other members of juries also express their views and opinions about the festival. They talk about their excitement and fulfillment for being one of the jury to judge the high-quality films competing for the festival.
Ang Lee says that "Honesty is essential. After that, we will no doubt discuss aesthetic, political or social considerations. But there will be something that will touch us that we will be unable to even put into words and that will be the Palme d'or. I hope so, because otherwise we will have to rationalize things.
Multi-awarded actress Nicole Kidman praised Cannes Festival as one prestigious festival. "I think that it is important to contribute to the celebration of film. I finally had the time to sit down and watch films. Cannes is a prestigious festival that has done a lot to promote the films in which I have acted.
Japanese filmmaker and founder of the Nara International Film festival, Naomi Kawase, shares that she is emotional thinking that she has the privilege to share her passion for cinema with newly found friends in the industry. "The festival is a place of encounters and friendship. Every year, it sends a message to the world. During our meeting yesterday, Steven came out with this fantastic phrase - we have different nationalities and professions, but we have a shared language, a passion for cinema.
1996 Cannes festival Best Male Actor for the film "The Eight Day", Daniel Auteuil admits that films competing for Cannes set his expectation as a film audience in general. "Looking at the films awarded Palmes d'or since the beginning of the festial, I realized that I had seen a lot of them and that these films had shaped my taste as a spectator. Having the opportunity to continue this tradition is a rare thing indeed."
Dubbed as one of the living legends of Indian Cinema, Vidya Balan says that it is her honor to be sitting as juror for the festival. "This is the first time I have been to cannes, the first time I have sat on a Jury and the hundredth anniversary of Indian Cinema. It is a great honor and I hope to learn as much as possible, to absorb and to watch."
Double awarded as writer and director for his film beyond Hills, Cristian Mungui, admits that he is strict when it comes to the director's handling of his subject matter. "It is very difficult to judge films. I look for honesty and courage in a director. A director's first step is to succeed in doing what he wants. The second is to be original."
Actor for "Water for Elephants" and the "Green Hornet", Christoph Waltz, expresses his intelligent side when asked about his process in judging, "An award is always the result, but the result of what? Good psychoanalysis involves both a psychoanalyst and a patient. We, each of us have our way of carrying out our task and mine is perhaps more descriptive than Cristian's."
