8-Year-Old Yemeni Bride Dies From Severe Sexual Injuries With 40-Year-Old Groom
A child bride in Yemen suffered gravely from severe sexual injuries with his 40-year-old groom during their wedding night. According to the reports of Al Watan, a daily Kuwaiti newspaper, the girl by then name of Rawan died after having torn genitalia along with the rupture of the uterine.
Numerous Kuwaiti activists have been calling for action against the groom and the family of the child bride who permitted the union. According to a blogger aka Angry Man was quoted in Gulf News that such people should be punished along with everyone who supports it. Another report says that this is not the first time that young Yemen girls are forced into fix marriages.
Remember the story of the courageous 11-year-old girl, who was also put into a similar situation but luckily escaped from her groom.
It was in February 2009 when the law made 17 as the legal age for marriage. But this was again changed when numerous lawmakers said that it was entirely "un-islamic." This recent tragic happening has moved the parliament constitutional committee to re-analyze and decide on this legislation within the month.
Many experts believe though that with or without such law on the legal age for marriage, the best tool to put an end to such tragic endings is education. Most parents of such kids are illiterate and have no understanding of what sex can do to harm their young girls. It is saddening to realize that this is not the first of its kind since there are about 140 million girls who have and are to become child brides from 2011 to 2020. Of that total number of young girls, 50 million are younger than 15 years old.
