85-Year-Old Canadian Farmer Fights Alone Against Government, Refuses to Give His Land
A Canadian farmer, 85, is fighting against the government's decision to expropriate his land. His lone fight now seems to have significant support, thanks to a media campaign for it.
Frank Meyers is not ready to sell his land to the government which has already secured every other land required for the military base. The process has been there since 2006, but the government's efforts were put to a hold by Mr Meyers. Even though his land was possessed by the government in 2012 itself, he was allowed to keep it on lease until Sept 30, 2013. Even though Mr Meyers have already signed on the dotted lines, he now claims that he was pressurised to do so.
When Alan Neal of CBC Radio got in touch with Mr Meyers on his show "All in a Day," he was informed that Mr Meyers was in no mood to hand it over to the government. Mr Meyers demanded that he should be allowed to continue to work and live in the farm which has belonged to his family since 1798.
Mr Meyers said that he would not want any money. He just wants to be "left alone," he said. Mr Meyers argued that he was producing food for the entire country through his farm, but the government was apparently not in favour of that. The core argument behind his lonely fight against the government so far has been that good farmlands in Canada are not enough in number to be taken away.
Dog Knutson, a local historian, said that he was sick about the battle between the government and the old man. A family that has been serving the country for the last 227 should be allowed to do what they have been doing, he argued. Mr Meyers apparently found more people who supported his cause. One such person is Lisa Gibson from Ottawa. She started a Facebook campaign called "Save Frank & Marjorie Meyers Farm" to support the old man's battle. The page has more than 30,000 likes at the moment.
According to Ms Gibson, Mr Meyers lives in constant fear that people will sneak in though the back way to throw him out of his land in the middle of the night. That is why he sleeps in the laneway. She believes that the old man does not deserve to live with such fear.
