Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott is not in favour of same-sex marriage, but if his lesbian sister gets married to her partner, he said he would attend the wedding ceremony because she is still part of his family.
But it seems the same type of accommodating behaviour would also apply to one of his non-heterosexual friends.
The PM will be introducing Cate McGregor, his college friend, who will be featured in ABC's Australian Story next week. Ms McGregor used to be Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm McGregor, an army officer and cricket expert whom Mr Abbott met during their student days.
She sort of disappeared from her friends' lives in 2012 when she underwent gender reassignment procedure. After a few months, Cate McGregor informed Mr Abbott of her changes, to which the politician responded that her new gender does not alter anything about their friendship.
Ms McGregor is still with the army because the army chief refused to accept her resignation despite the gender change. However, she has acknowledged discrimination in the Australian military.

"There are two really archetypical alpha-male environments, the military and global cricket ... And both of them have been extraordinary in their acceptance of me since my transition. I've had Ian Chappell and Rahul Dravid and all these guys completely accept me, which is incredibly empowering," Illawaramercury quoted Ms McGregor.
She can add to that list Mr Abbott, who has been accused by former Australian PM Julia Gillard of being a misogynist.

Ms McGregor was a speech writer for chief of army David Morrison, former political adviser to Labor Premier Bob Carr and Liberal leader John Hewson.
