AC/DC Drummer Phil Rudd Accused Of Attempting to Procure Murder
AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd has been charged with attempting to procure a murder in New Zealand. The 60-year-old Australian rocker appeared in the Tauranga District Court on Thursday, where he entered no plea.
Rudd, 60, was arrested Thursday morning when his house was raided by police. He has also been charged with possession of methamphetamine and marijuana, as well as threatening to kill. He was released on bail following his court appearance. He is expected to reappear in court on November 27.
Court documents show that Rudd allegedly hired a person to kill two people between September 25 and 26. He also appeared to have threatened to kill complainant on September 26. The details of the complaints and the names of his alleged intended targets and hitman were suppressed by Judge Louis Bidois of Tauranga District Court.
As part of his bail conditions, he must live at his Bureta home and have no contact with the man he is accused of hiring to kill other people.
Rudd has lived in Tauranga for years. He was also previously convicted of possessing marijuana in 2010. Earlier this year, he was ordered to pay more than $70,000 to the former employees of his Phil’s Place marina restaurant for unjustified dismissal.
The only Australian-born member of AC/DC, Rudd was the drummer for the hard rock band from 1975 until 1983, and again from 1994 up to now. The band has recently announced their 16th studio album, “Rock or Bust,” but Rudd’s image is noticeably absent from the materials.
“I don’t think AC/DC did themselves a great service by not saying anything,” biographer Jesse Fink, author of “The Youngs: The Brothers Who Built AC/DC,” told the Daily Mail Australia of Rudd’s absence from the new album. “All they did was just fuel the rumour mill, which has been churning for some time now.”
Rudd released his debut solo album “Head Job” in August.
“Rock or Bust” is the first album of the band without founding member Malcolm Young, who is confirmed to be suffering from dementia. He is replaced by his nephew Stevie Young.
