Adam Levine has come under fire for saying he hate his country on live TV. The American musician was heard muttering “I hate this country” on “The Voice” on Tuesday.

The Maroon 5 lead vocalist uttered those words when host Carson Daly revealed on the NBC talent show that viewers voted to save contestant Amber Carrington.

The words seemed out of place given that Carrington belongs to his team, but apparently Levine was upset because two of his other team members, Judith Hill and Sarah Simmons, were eliminated a few minutes later in the show.

As expected, his hot mic blunder has sparked online backlash against him, with people calling him an ingrate. There were even people on Twitter who want NBC to fire the 34-year-old singer from their show.

“Since @adamlevine ‘Hates his country’ I think @NBCTheVoice needs to replace him as a judge,” a Twitter comment from user Chris said.

Another named Sheila Barron wrote, “@adamlevine You sounded pissed when u said ‘I hate this country.’ I will no longer be your fan because of your comment.”

“adam Levine ‘hates america’... the country that made him a millionaire for being a douche bag. Idiocracy,” a Terrell Williams wrote.

But not all want Levine to be deported from the country or fired from “The Voice.” Many Twitter commenters understand his frustration.

“I love how @adamlevine’s ‘I hate this country’ comment has sparked such a controversy. People take s*** way too seriously,” Tori Louise wrote.

“If I were @adamlevine, i would have said ‘I hate this country” too because America got it dead wrong. NO ONE from his team should have left,” a show fan named Samantha said.

“@adamlevine Don’t sweat it Adam! When I head you say ‘I hate this country.’ I couldn’t help but laugh cause I knew you were sad!” Brandi Schoolcraft said.

“I’m sure that @adamlevine was not being unpatriotic! General statement! Cmon people!” Twitter follower Garth Baker wrote.

What upsets some Twitter followers is the way Levine responded to the backlash by posting dictionary definitions of the words joke, humourless, light-hearted, and misunderstand, as a way to defend his controversial outburst.

For his part, Levine has also issued a statement explaining why he said that.

“I obviously love my country very much and my comments last night were made purely out of frustration,” he told Us Weekly.

“Being part of The Voice, I am passionately invested in my team and want to see my artists succeed. Last night’s elimination of Judith and Sarah was confusing and downright emotional for me and my comments were made based on my personal dissatisfaction with the results.

“I am very connected to my artists and know they have long careers ahead, regardless of their outcome on the show.”
