After serving Collingwood FC for 13 seasons, David Buttifant has stepped down as its sports science director.

Rumour has it that Buttifant will be joining Carlton FC and Collingwood's former coach Mick Malthouse.

Gary Pert, Collingwood's chief, knows the value of Buttifant to the team and how much of an impact his resignation would have.

"David is recognised as an innovator in his field and has helped drive the professional standards of the club over the last 13 years," Pert said in a statement, quoted by afl.com.au.

"He has been a very popular member of the Collingwood family and certainly someone who can say that he left the organisation in a much better shape than when he arrived.

"As part of on-going discussions this year with David, both parties agreed that it was the perfect time to seek out a new challenge. David leaves with the total support and best wishes of everyone at the club."

Buttifant, who was essential in Collingwood's great display of runs highlighted by the 2010 premiership win, was grateful of the opportunity that Collingwood has given him.

"It was a privilege and a pleasure to spend so many years at the club," said Buttifant.

"Sharing in such a wonderful time in Collingwood's history, working with some outstanding people and making so many good friends is something I will always cherish."

The Magpies were surprisingly ousted by Port Adelaide with a scoreline of 63-87.

A poor display of performance all throughout the game cost them the chance to get back to premiership glory.

They will now be looking to assess their deficiencies and prepare for the upcoming season.

Meanwhile, Port Adelaide will face Geelong in the semi-finals, while Sydney will play Carlton.
