AFL News: West Coast Eagles keep coach and CEO following a mixed season
The West Coast Eagles extended the contract deals of the senior coach Adam Simpson and chief executive Trevor Nisbett. Simpson has been given a one-year extension on top of his two-year deal earlier while Nisbett signed a three-year deal.
Simpson's first year as coach resulted in the Eagles finishing ninth with 11 wins and 11 losses. However, his performance is not considered a complete failure considering that the team played without its key performers. Hence, Simpson coached a relatively young team this season as most of the seniors were benched due to fitness issues. Moreover, the team's output is considered to fall under a steep learning curve following the mid-season retirement of Darren Glass. The team narrowly missed the finals even after a convincing win over Gold Coast last Saturday. In addition, Eagle's would have cruised to the finals of the AFL had Sydney beaten Richmond in the final round.
Initially, Simpson's men were not able to find the right rhythm, as exemplified by their single victory across eight fixtures. Moreover, the fitness crisis proved to be a challenge in the Eagle's performance this season. Most of the senior players, such as Beau Waters, Matt Rosa and Scott Selwood, missed a large chunk of the AFL season. However, the players staged a strong comeback and won five of their seven games recently.
Trevor Nisbett, on the other hand, rejected offers from rival clubs and decided to stay at West Coast. He signed a new three- year deal and is bound to stay with the team until the end of 2017 season. Nisbett, who joined West Coast in 1989 as manager, took up the Chief Executive role ten years later. Moreover, Nisbett became the third non-playing member to be inducted in West Coast's Hall of Fame this August.
The Eagles are planning to move to Lathlain Park, where a new training and administration facility will be laid. A 99-year lease for a permanent move to Lathlain has already been signed. This move pushed Nisbett to exert immense effort as it required him to negotiate with the state and federal governments the building of the $60 million facility.
The new facility is regarded as a mega project, which will include two full-sized ovals. One of the ovals will have the dimensions of the MCG.
