Same-sex couple Lynley Bendall and Ally Wanikau are set to marry 9,000 metres above ground. The mothers of three were declared winners of the Air New Zealand competition to get married onboard a special flight from Queenstown to Auckland on Aug 19, when the country’s Marriage Amendment Act comes into effect.

Auckland residents Ms Bendall and Ms Wanikau submitted a video entry to the contest, in which their three children are seen holding placards to explain their story.

The company said that it has received many heart-warming entries from same-sex couples of all ages around the country.

“The winners have an amazing love story to tell and are thrilled to be having such a unique wedding that they can share with family and friends,” Jodi Williams, Air New Zealand head of Global Brand Development, said.

The couple, who are mums to 9-year-old Javarn, 7-year-old Maycee, and 6-year-old Mikaere, have been together since meeting through work 14 years ago. Their children have been in their care since they were babies.

“The kids were in the car when we got the call to tell us we had won. The whole school will know by now,” Ms Bendall said of their win.

There are not much details revealed, although it has been advertised ahead that “Modern Family” star Jesse Tyler Ferguson will be the winning couple’s special guest in their wedding.

Of course, their family and friends will also be present in the sky-high ceremony.

Following the ceremony above the air and the later reception, the couple will jet off to Palm Springs, California, for their honeymoon, also courtesy of the airline.

Ferguson, meanwhile, also recently had his own wedding. He married lawyer Justin Mikita on July 20, 2013 in New York City after being together for two years.
