Sir Alex Ferguson, former Manchester United manager talks about his one-time star midfielder David Beckham had "lost focus" and blames former Spice Girl Victoria Adams on her influence over the talented footballer's career.
The legendary MU manager was interviewed on the Charlie Rose show and discussed multiples topics which includes listening to Civil War tapes on the way to work, the trick of handling millionaire stars in the club, and remembers Beckham's lovely smile and his great desire as a young kid to become one of the best footballer.
"Well, he always had a lovely smile, you know, and he always presents himself well. But as a young kid when I got him at 12 years of age, his great desire was to do the best. He was a fantastic trainer, practiced all the time and at night he would come back with the school boys and practice with them," he says while reminising the times with the young David.
"And then of course his life changed when he married the girl from" --- Spice Girls, says Charlie Rose. "Yes, and his focus changed," he added.
Beckham, known as England's most-capped outfield player left Machester United in 2003 to join Spanish giants Real Madrid.
"If I was going to go, I would be making sure he would go to the best, and Real Madrid was the best, I would say, and United," he added.
Ferguson expressed his astonishment when Beckham decided to join Los Angeles Galaxy in 2007 and thinks that his marriage with Victoria made a sudden change in their "celebrity status."
"He got drawn into the -- that celebrity status, you know? And for me, I'm a football man. I'm a football man," he explained.
But at the end, Ferguson is all proud of Beckham and said: "But he reinvented himself. He goes and plays for the English national team for a couple more years. He goes and plays for AC Milan (in the) European Cup. He's unbelievable. He really is -- and good, well done to him. You can't argue with the status he has in life."
