Amber Heard fires back at Johnny Depp for donating divorce settlement to charities directly
The divorce drama between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp isn’t over yet. The “Magic Mike XXL” actress has called out the “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor for donating her divorce settlement money directly to her chosen charities, claiming that the actor is not being truthful to his intentions.
The 30-year-old actress, who was reportedly awarded US$7 million (AU$9.1 million) in the agreement last week, announced that she would be donating the money to Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles and the American Civil Liberties Union.
Representatives of the actress told TMZ that the 53-year-old actor would fail to honour the terms of the divorce settlement if he were to personally donate the money on Heard’s behalf as he would benefit from a hefty tax deduction, which means he is actually paying less than what was initially agreed upon.
“If Johnny wishes to change the settlement agreement, we must insist that he honour the full amount by donating US$14 million (AU$18.3 million) to charity, which after accounting for his tax deduction, is equal to his US$7 million (AU$9.1 million) payment obligation to Amber,” Heard’s reps told TMZ, adding that Depp should pay the amount in its entirety immediately rather than in installments.
“Anything less would be a transparent attempt by Johnny’s counsel, Laura Wasser and Patti Glaser, to reduce their client's true payment by half under the guise of newfound concern for charities that he has never previously supported,” Heard’s team said.
A week ago,the actors settled their divorce case and she withdrew her restraining order against him.
Following the settlement, the actors released a joint statement describing their relationship as “intensely passionate and at times volatile but always bound by love.” They added that “there was never any intent of physical or emotional harm.”
The actors met in 2011 while filming “The Rum Diary” and married in February 2015. The marriage lasted for 15 months.
