America Warns ISIS Lone Wolves Targeting Times Square, Las Vegas, Other High-Profile Tourist Locations
The NYPD has sent out members of its elite Hercules team out on the streets to man the city against potential "lone wolf" bomb attacks staged by the ISIS.
The scramble to guard the city ensued after reports came out that members at some online ISIS forums have encouraged "lone wolf" bomb attacks. Instructions on how to fabricate pipe bombs using easily obtained materials were likewise reportedly included in those forums.
The original report was published by Vocativ.
John Miller, NYPD Deputy Chief of Counterterrorism and Intelligence, police presence will be highly visible in and around Times Square as well as in and around mass transits.
Bill Bratton, New York City Police Commissioner, said they have yet to detect any specific threat to the city. He admitted, however, that they are concerned with ISIS' capabilities because the militant group has exhibited much more "than what al Qaeda was ever able to project."
Vocativ, a Web site that publishes "news from the deep web," claimed it stumbled into a forum with a post detailing instructions on how to create a pipe-bomb. The post, it said, likewise suggested targets, including several tourist sites in Texas.
The forums also discussed adding powdered chlorine as a chemical element in the bombs.
The instructions were culled from a 2010 issue of Al Qaeda's Inspire, 'How to Make a Bomb From the Kitchen of Your Mom.' Vocative strongly believes the post was meant to inspire and encourage "lone wolf" bombers in the U.S.
Vocativ quoted Jimmie Oxley, a University of Rhode Island professor, as saying the information is already so outdated because the materials hasn't been around since the "1960s or 1970s." however, despite the lack, Oxley admitted the plans are still actionable.
Vocativ reported the Tsarnaev brothers allegedly used the very same guide to carry out the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013. The manual allegedly highlighted the destructive efficacy of making a bomb using a pressure cooker.
The necessary bomb-making ingredients, the forum said, are easy to obtain, easy to dispose of quickly and most importantly for terror groups, difficult to detect, so much so that even police sniffer dogs won't be able to smell it.
It also gave instructions how to pack the bomb using shrapnel-like pieces of metal for maximum effect, casings to use depending on where the bomb will be deployed, how to ensure the safety of the bomber and where to place a bomb to create the most carnage.
It likewise contained advise on how would-be bomb-makers can cover their tracks to avoid detection and law apprehension, according to Vocativ.
"When you talk about threats over social media the business end is not on where the information originates-it's on the users' end," Miller said. "What it is calling on is lone wolves to take these instructions and carry on individual attacks."
