American Dentist Offers $1 per Pound of Unopened Halloween Candies
Halloween is just a week away. To help children protect their teeth from decay caused by excessive candy consumption, Ohio dentist Craig Callen devised an incentive system which kids may find sweeter than their Halloween loot.
Callen is offering $1 per pound of unopened candies that children will collect from their trick-or-treat rounds. Besides the money payment, the kids will also receive a new toothbrush, the Mansfield News Journal reports.
Besides the cash and toothbrush incentives, the dentist also threw in two children's bikes which he would raffle off.
"Visiting your dentist twice a year and brushing your teeth are great preventive measures, but doing away with excess sweets would really give your teeth a healthy boost," Callen told the paper.
Callen and his associates' budget for the candy buyback scheme is $1,000. Their offer is good from Oct. 31 to Nov 4.
Not all Ohio kids may bite the dentist's offer. Some may opt to keep their favorite sweets and bring their least favorite candies and chocolates to Mr Callen instead.
Dietitian Gloria Tsang compared 14 favorite Halloween trick-or-treat giveaways to help kids and parents know which of the sweets cause less damage to their children's teeth and health. She explained that there is a big difference in calories, sugar and quality of ingredients use.
"It's just not true that all Halloween candy is the same. None of them are exactly good for you," Tsang said in a statement.
Here is her comparison:
Winner | Loser | Explanation |
PayDay | Reese Peanut Butter Cups | Reese uses a commercial emulsified to reduce cocoa butter. PayDay only has peanuts, no sugar as first ingredient. |
Kit Kat | Twix | Both have similar calories and sugar content, but Twix has more ingredients although it did not place caramel on the list. |
M&M | Skittles | Both contain artificial coloring and wax, but M&M has less sugar and small amount of calcium and protein |
Baby Ruth | Snickers | Snickers have partially hydrogenated oil and Baby Ruth has high-fructose corn syrup and preservative, but Snickers have larger portion and therefore more calories. |
Mounds | Almond Joy | Mounds have fewer ingredients and does not have hydrogenated oil. |
3 Musketeers | Hershey Milk Chocolate | Hershey contains the commercial emulsifier, while 3 Musketeers include real cocoa powder. |
Whoppers | Milk Duds | Milk Duds stick to teeth which causes problems for kids with dental issues. Smaller Whoppers have lesser calories. |
