'American Idol' 2014 Review: Top 10 Sings Top 10 Billboard Hits to Boost Votes; Jena Irene, MK Nobilette Choose Well; Sam Woolf in Trouble? [Watch Video]
"American Idol" 2014 Top 10 tackles the Top 10 Billboard charters from the year 2010 to present. The widely popular songs may help contestants pull more votes, but there is no guarantee. MK Nobilette and Jena Irene seem to have chosen their songs well. However, some of them might choose poorly. Sam Woolf, for instance, is covering Fun/ Janelle Monáe.
American Idol judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick, Jr are probably hoping for a much better show than the previous weeks. Connick said a week ago he is aware of the "no belter this year" feedback, but he disagrees. Still, there has been more huge disappointments than wows. Case in point: Majesty York's "Let It Go" number.
Five ladies and five gents remain in the competition. Who will win this year's American Idol title? For these 10, all that matters now are (1) they are going on tour and (2) they should not be in the bottom three this week.
Among Alex Preston, CJ Harris, Caleb Johnson, Dexter Roberts and Sam Woolf, there are three WGWG (white guys with guitars). Critics, like the erstwhile votefortheworst.com, say these WGWGs tend to mesmerize more American Idol voters. Case in point: Phillip Phillips (Season 11), Scotty McCreery (Season 10), Lee DeWyze (Season 9), Kris Allen (Season 8), and David Cook (Season 7).
However, American Idol 2013 (Season 12) may have broken the spell (if there ever was one) with Candice Glover. The girls these year, Jena Irene Asciutto, Jess Meuse, Majesty York, Malaya, and MK are nowhere near Candice's singing prowess. Some of them can belt power notes, but they cannot wow the audience the way Candice wowed Mariah Carey more than once a year ago. Still, someone has to win this year.
According to American Idol 2014 spoiler alerts, these are the songs that the Top 10 will sing Wednesday night (Mar. 19) on FOX:
Alex Preston - "Story Of My Life" by One Direction
C.J. Harris - "Invisible" by Hunter Hayes
Caleb Johnson - "The Edge Of Glory" by Lady Gaga
Dexter Roberts - "Cruise" by Florida Georgia Line
Sam Woolf - "We Are Young" by Fun/Janelle Monáe
Jena Irene Asciutto - "Clarity" by Zedd/Foxes
Jessica "Jess" Meuse - TBD
Majesty York - TBD
Malaya Watson - TBD
M.K. Nobilette - "(Fuckin') Perfect" by Pink
Jena Irene takes on "Clarity," a song popularized by American Idol 2012 runner-up Jessica Sanchez on Glee (FOX). This is a smart move, considering she nailed Paramore's "Decode" last week. Jena is clearly hoping to draw votes that will keep her safe. Despite being a wildcard and landing in the bottom three once, Jena remains a strong AI 2014 contender.
If she treats Pink's song well, MK Nobilette may have more supporters this week. MK tends to lose the voters when she goes for upbeat songs. But the brilliant words in "(Fuckin') Perfect" might help. MK is one of the early favourites among American Idol 2014 contestants. However, she's been in the bottom three twice.
As for Sam Woolf, Connick has repeatedly hinted he has to develop the ability to change his expressions, show some confidence, loosen up and look fun. He's singing a Fun. tune, but it might not be as fun as it should be. Sam was in American Idol 2014 Top 11 bottom three - the first male contestant this year to ever get there.
Sam Woolf tried a fun song, "Come Together" by The Beatles, on American Idol Season 13 Top 11 Performance Night. The result? Bottom three. This week, will Sam manage to connect to the audience?
