‘American Idol’ 2014 Top 5 Performance Review: Recap of Highlights; Alex Preston’s ‘Say Something’ FTW, Sam Woolf in Trouble? [Watch Videos]
"American Idol" 2014 (Season 13) Top 5 performed live on FOX on Apr. 30. Alex Preston's "Say Something" rendition is what fans would call FTW (for the win). It was one of the best this week. Sam Woolf seems to be the weakest link now. Jason Mraz is this week's celebrity mentor.
American Idol Season 13 judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban, and Harry Connick, Jr all enjoyed the night. This is one of the better nights of the season. Idol hopefuls leading the Top 5 are Caleb Johnson and Alex Preston, both of whom have never been in the bottom.
Jessica Meuse seemed to have brought her A-game this week on American Idol Top 5. She was in the bottom two in as many weeks. Singing songs "America" chose for her did Meuse some good. Jess' cover of Christina Perri's "Human" and Lana del Rey's "Summertime Sadness" showcased a more vulnerable side of her. This is what Keith Urban had been missing from the oldest contestant in the show.
Watch the Top 5 -- Jessica Meuse, Caleb Johnson, Alex Preston, Sam Woolf and Jena Irene Asciutto -- in the videos posted by American Idol Season 13 on YouTube.
One of the best in Wednesday's AI Top 5 live numbers was Alex Preston's particularly compelling version of A Great Big World's "Say Something." AI judge Harry Connick Jr was evidently impressed. Just a week ago, Harry admitted he used to ask himself whether quiet performances could work for the long haul. Alex has been proving that it can.
Preston's take on The Neighbourhood's "Sweater Weather," however, was not stellar.
Caleb Johnson has often ruled American Idol 2013 performance nights. But he was not very good when he sang Aerosmith's "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing." But his take on Whitesnake's "Still of the Night" could keep him safe in Thursday's results show.
Jena Irene Asciutto is the stronger of the two remaining American Idol Season 13 female contenders. Despite being a Top 13 wildcard and landing in the bottom three several weeks ago, she has been safe in the most recent, most critical phase of the competition.
Jena Irene tackled Lana del Rey's "Summertime Sadness" and the late Amy Winehouse's "Valerie." She was good in both, but more impressive in 'Summertime.' Jena is a gem in American Idol Season 13. She is one of the best performers in this 2014 batch. She always obviously enjoys the stage and the audience responds to that positively.
Sam Woolf sang Ed Sheeran's "Sing" and The Fray's "How to Save a Life." The former didn't work for him, and the latter was not strong enough. When it comes to versatility, stage presence, and believability, Sam is the weakest among the Top 5 in American Idol Season 13.
This could be Sam's final week on the show.
