American Idol Faces Racial Class Lawsuit as 10 Black Contestants Claim “Illegal Disqualification” from Fox Reality Show [PHOTOS]
American Idol and its officials are facing class lawsuit when 10 former black contestants banded together and demanded damages for what they claimed as “illegal disqualification” on the Fox’s reality show.
The 10 former American Idol hopefuls are demanding a staggering $25 million each in a class racial lawsuit they had just filed, claiming discrimination and unlawful disqualification.
The former Idols’ claims for damages is the latest in the legal document the group submitted to U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission by New York Attorney James H. Freeman.
In the letter first reported by TMZ in January 2013, Freeman was asking permission to sue Idol and Fox on behalf of the 10 black contestants. This was part of the legal procedure before Freeman could actually launch legal battle against Fox and Idol officials.
The contestants claim that they strongly believe they were “unjustly booted” because of their race, calling it “cruel and inhumane.” The former hopefuls claim that the move of the show’s officials to disqualify contestants - - which they pointed out in the document as all blacks - - was part of their scheme or “plot” to boost ratings.
They argue that the show’s top honchos strategically conducted more in depth inquiries about the contestants’ arrest history at the initial stage on the ‘Idol’ auditions - - the move that they insisted was part of their plans to paint the subjected Idol hopefuls as “violent criminals, liars and sexual deviants.”
The group’s lawyer asserted that those publicly disqualified since ‘Idol’ hit the air , “were all black."
Through their lawyer, the contestants vehemently denied that the contestants booted off are what the show’s producers claim them to be - - as bad guys. They said that none of them had “ever been convicted of the charges resulting from their arrests.”
The contestants who demand $25 million each from the show’s officials and the Fox network are the following: Corey Clark (Season 2), Jaered Andrews (Season 2), Jacob John Smalley (Season 2), Donnie Williams (Season 3), Terrell Brittenum (Season 5), Derrell Brittenum (Season 5), Thomas Daniels (Season 6), Akron Watson (Season 6), Ju'Not Joyner (Season 8), and Chris Golightly (Season 9).
They contend that the black contestants were the only ones asked of their criminal backgrounds. When this argument goes to forth and when proven by the petitioners, Fox officials may have a lot of explaining to do.
The ten petitioners are suing for discrimination and more alleged misdeeds, said TMZ. They are also calling for the adoption of new anti-racism regulations.
