If it were all up to the judges, Phillip Phillips would have won American Idol Tuesday night. He took time to build his momentum in the first round, and relaxed in the second. When he got to his third last song, he was simply more compelling than ever.

Phillip changed up "Stand By Me" in his first performance, and managed to render his artistry to the classic without messing it up. He came off as a performer who knew what he was doing, and he was having a good time on stage. The audience, in turn, felt the same way, too.

In his second number, Phillip revisited Billy Joel's "Movin' Out" with stronger passion and vocal energy than what he delivered months ago during the Top 10 performance show. His fans would have preferred that he sang "Volcano" or "U Got it Bad," but Phillip went for lyrics to which he could personally relate.

The two popular song choices were love songs to the very core, but Phillip chose something that spoke of life choices and a desire for personal growth. He came off as not only as relevant, but a profound artist.

In the third round, Phillip dished out a magical melody that showed everyone he has arrived. "Home" was such a great song with which Phillip can jumpstart his career post-Idol. It brought out yet another alter ego within him, and it was something the judges have never seen before. How can one artist contain so many versions of himself? Then again, it seems the most natural thing for Phillip to do.

Randy Jackson thought Phillip lost in the first round. But he came back in the second round to tie up with rival Jessica Sanchez. Come third round, Randy's cheers and applause for Phillip revealed more than the original Idol judge could say.
