American Idol Season 11: Top 8 Performances Review, Joshua Ledet and Jessica Sanchez for the Final Two?
American Idol's Top 8 picked songs from the 1980s on Wednesday's performance night, and most of them delivered impressive numbers, with only one or two failing to make a mark on stage.
Deandre Brackensick was first to perform with "I Like It" by El DeBarge. Guest mentor Gwen Stefani noted he should avoid looking worried but this young singer could not help it. He may have the vocals, but he has a long way to go when it comes to connecting to his music. It seemed the only connection he had was with his hair. Seriously, all the hair motions looked forced, unnatural and inorganic all together. He may be bent on making it his thing but it has been so annoying. Good thing he did not overdo his falsettos for his number, and he did sound fine; in fact, it would not be surprising to know if his cover would enjoy significant downloads. However, on stage, he does not carry with him the 'x factor' needed for a spot in the big finals. If he would skip the bottom three on results night, the outlook will not be good for some better performers in the contest.
If only the contestants' solo numbers would be considered for a forecast on who would go home and end their Idol journey tonight (US time), Hollie Cavanagh is the only foreseeable bottom three dweller. Her performance was a seriously bad mess, a number that fell behind by a hundred notches to Deandre's opening act, even if he was ice cold and annoying. As fate would have it, the two had a duet number which happens to be the least enjoyable duet of the night. Ironically, they sang "I'm So Excited" by Pointer Sisters. Needless to say Hollie could only make it another week if Deandre (or a third bottom three contestant) went home first.
This forecaster could not easily pick a third Idol hopeful for the bottom three. Well, there's Elise Testone, a former bottom three regular, who rocked it out loud and clear and was subsequently voted safe last week on the show. She did a pretty good job with Foreigner's 'I Want to Know what Love Is,' but the judges chose not to focus on the bright side of her take on the song. They each gave her the cold shoulder, although they all came back to her side after her fantastic and enjoyable duet with Phillip Phillips. The duo's take on Stevie Nicks/Tom Petty hit Stop Dragging My Heart Around was so convincing it was easy to forget a contest was still on. This number may have earned more votes for Elise, who would be a good match to Phillip in the finals. That is, if judge Jennifer Lopez was wrong in her Jessica Sanchez-Joshua Ledet finale forecast.
Meanwhile, Skylar Laine finally slowed down and delivered a generally popular song -- Bette Midler/Gary Morris' Wind Beneath My Wings, no less. She was undoubtedly good and apparently, moving enough to put tears in JLo's eyes. Then again, she was also good last week, when she landed in the bottom three for the first time. This young girl is not going to be easy to sell as a recording artist. She's not current, she doesn't have that 'it' quality, and she does not have an interesting personality to lend to the music she's delivering. The judges raved about her performance, as they did so last week, but she just does not seem to match the 'Idol' title.
Between Elise and Skylar, Skylar is more in danger of hitting the bottom three again.
Seemingly far from the bottom is Skylar's partner in the duet number, Colton Dixon. He changed up Cyndi Lauper's 'Time after Time' and owned the song, just as he beautifully nailed Billy Joel's 'Piano Man' in the past. Enjoying the no-bottom-three experience with Phillip and Jessica, Colton seems to be on a straight path to the final three, unless Joshua Ledet has more supporters than him, which does not seem likely at this point.
Joshua Ledet, Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez all seem to be in a safe place this week. Joshua's duet with Jessica was another convincing and enjoyable performance, and it was easy to understand why JLo uttered "Final two?" in her post-number review. At this point, however, it is very, very difficult to imagine a Finals without Phillip Phillips. This guy has a solid and perhaps still growing number of supporters and with his 'Idol' best friend Heejun Han's departure last week, the numbers could only look good for Phillip when the results are revealed Thursday night.
So who is going home? Deandre, Hollie, or Skylar?
