American Woman Gang-Raped in India
A horrifying gang-rape ended an American tourist's supposedly enjoyable travel to a hill resort in Northern India, Reuters reported.
According to police, the American tourist visited some of her friends in the area and had a hard time finding a taxi to take her home. A man driving a truck, with two other passengers, asks her to hitch-hike back to where she was staying in the town of Manali in Himachal Pradesh.
However, the three men did not take the American tourist back to her hotel but instead take an opposite direction 10.5 miles away. The woman was quickly overpowered by her attackers and alternately subjected her to their immoral deed.
The woman had already given her statement to the police and was given medical aid and preliminary medical tests before the police drive her to the guest house where she was staying. A local inspector told Reuters that the medical results confirmed that the woman was subjected to forceful sexual intercourse.
According to the police investigator who refused to be named, "Her condition is stable and she is accompanied by two women constables. All medical help has been given, and the doctors have been taking care of her. We have told her we are like family and are available for any help."
According to earlier reports circulated, there were already three men who were identified as the rapists and had been taken in to custody by the police but were later released.
However Himachal Pradesh police Chief B. Kamal Kamur clarified that there was misinterpretation with the earlier reports saying, "Sorry, I think I was misquoted. I think they were detained for questioning, they were not arrested."
Spokesman for the U.S. embassy in New Delhi refused to comment on the issue. Rest assured, they are in contact with the proper authorities and because they want to respect the victim's appeal for privacy, they have decided to handle the issue in strict confidentiality.
The incident was the recent reported cases among the series of harassment inflicted to women in the country. Sadly, the horrifying incident was not something new to India. The country's National Crime Records Bureau said that there are more than 24, 200 reported cases of rape across India since 2011. One rape incident happens in about every 20 minutes.
Just this weekend, police were conducting its investigation on a rape case involving a 21-year-old Irish woman who came to India as a social worker in a non-governmental organization in West Bengal.
During the month of March, a Swiss tourist was also gang-raped as she went on her camping trip in a forest located central state of Madhya Pradesh. During the same month, a British woman escaped her rapist by bravely jumping from her hotel balcony in Uttar Pradesh.
And who will ever forget the case of the 23-year-old Indian woman who was gang-raped inside a bus in New Delhi and died due to the beatings done by her attackers? The case provoked protests among Indians and shocked people from around the globe. The locals appealed for their government to enforced strict police security in their country but it seemed like the appeal was futile since similar cases still happens.
Officials from the U.S. State Department issued a travel advisory for those travelling to India, "Women should observe stringent security precautions, including avoiding use of public transport after dark without the company of known and trustworthy companions."
