Amy Schumer to star in upcoming Barbie movie
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Amy Schumer is currently in talks to star in Sony’s live-action Barbie. The film, slated for release in summer 2018, will see Schumer evicted from Barbieland for her eccentricities. The Sony Pictures film is based on the venerable Mattel toyline and will begin its production in spring.
Schumer will play a character that lives in Barbieland together with other Barbie dolls. However, she will be kicked out of Barbieland for not being perfect enough. She then embarks on a journey set to explore the real world.
Sony bought the rights from Mattel in 2014. It generated around US$3 billion (AUD$ 4.02 billion) in sales. The original script of this movie was written by Rio 2’s Jenny Bicks. In this film, the script is made by Hilary Winston which was picked out of a choice of three by Mattel and producers Walter F. Parkes, Laurie MacDonald and Amy Pascal. A director for the film has yet to be finalised.
Mattel received lots of criticisms as to why they chose Schumer to play the role as Barbie. Critics have been questioning the doll's unrealistic figure. However, Schumer was not affected at all. She didn’t even have any negative feedbacks when she was considered in Glamour magazine’s plus-size issue published this year.
"I think there's nothing wrong with being plus size. Beautiful healthy women," Schumer vented on Instagram at the time, sharing a snapshot of the Women Who Inspire Us article featuring celebs deemed Chic At Any Size.
Comedian Amy Schumer credits her success in the industry to her 2015 film "Trainwreck." She is currently working on a dramatic film entitled "Thank You for Your Service." Schumer also wrapped filming on an upcoming mother/daughter comedy that marks Goldie Hawn's first film role in 15 years.
Schumer was set to have her Australian Tour soon. The comedian canceled days before she was scheduled to perform in Perth. The tour’s promoter, Live Nation, said it “regretfully advised” that the tour had been cancelled because of an illness. Though they have not scheduled any replacement dates, Live Nation is working to confirm her return to Australia as soon it can.
