Google official unveiled the next generation Android 5.0 Lollipop coming soon to Nexus, Google Play Edition and Android One devices. So what makes this new OS version a lot better when compared to Android KitKat or Android Jelly Bean update?

User Interface Revamped

Users have seen the changes on the user interface during the release of Android KitKat but Android Lollipop has more to offer on this department. Unlike with previous Android releases, Android 5.0 features the first UI with themes Material Design.

These themes are seen through different colours schemes implemented to most native apps and services by Google such as Hangouts, Chrome, Gmail, YouTube, Google Play Store and more. Developers can also use the Material Design UI if desired to blend in to the theme provided by Android Lollipop.

Improved Power Management

Android 5.0 Lollipop is the first Android OS version to feature a native battery saving tool which was never found on Android KitKat or Android Jelly Bean. Most users of Android devices running Android vanilla will need to download third-party apps such as Juice Defender in order to customise profiles and extend battery life unlike with branded models such as Galaxy or Xperia which sports manufacturer-based power savers.

Project Volta on Android 5.0 Lollipop is capable of extending the battery life by up to 90 minutes of usage, more accurate reading of power usage and estimated time left to fully recharge the battery. Moreover, Project Volta reduces battery recharging time than Android KitKat or Android Jelly Bean.

Personalised User Accounts

Android devices running Android Lollipop will now have user modes including guest mode. The new security implementation can allow creation of multiple user accounts to enable friends to log in on the device under a controlled environment.

Controlled environment means that no one will be able to access apps, services and files protected by the private user account. In addition to multiple user accounts, Google also added Android Smart Lock to secure a smartphone or tablet by pairing it with a trusted device such as an Android wearable or a car.

New Quick Settings

New shortcuts on the Quick Settings have been added to enhanced user experience on accessing certain functions. Controls such as flashlight, hotspot, cast screen, manual brightness and adaptive brightness are added to the new Quick Settings.

Android Runtime And Performance

Google includes a new runtime on Android Lollipop to bring a faster, smoother and powerful computing experience. Android Runtime or ART improves application performance and responsiveness, smoother user interface and compacting background apps and services for improved multitasking. ART was available on Android KitKat but not as a default runtime environment.

Android 5.0 Lollipop is the default OS version on Motorola Nexus 6 and HTC Nexus 9 devices. It will also be released on other Nexus devices and branded models via manufacturer's update.
