Android 5.0 Lollipop Update: Top Popular Devices Planned And Eligible To Brand New OS
HTC, Motorola and Google announced which devices will receive Android 5.0 Lollipop update soon. Samsung and Sony remains silent on when or which will receive the new firmware version.
Android 5.0 Lollipop For HTC One Series
Taiwanese tech company HTC already confirmed the upcoming Android 5.0 Lollipop update for HTC One Series. Android 5.0 L is coming to several models of the HTC One series but will start on HTC One M8 and HTC One M7.
According the official website, HTC promised to release the next generation OS version to HTC One family within 90 days to worldwide users after receiving the final version from Google. Aside from HTC One family, HTC also mentioned to deliver Android 5.0 Lollipop other selected devices.
Android 5.0 Lollipop For Motorola Devices
Motorola released an announcement of Android 5.0 Lollipop update coming soon to several devices aside from the default runner Nexus 6. Once Google officially releases Android 5.0 L, Motorola plans to bring the latest software upgrade to Moto X both first and second generation, Moto G with 4G LTE and Moto E.
Other selected devices mentioned by Motorola to receive Android 5.0 Lollipop include Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx and Droid Mini. Release dates of Android 5.0 Lollipop update for Motorola devices will depend on the company's partners' support such as network carriers.
Android 5.0 Lollipop Directly From Google For Nexus Devices
As usual, Nexus users are getting exclusive Android 5.0 Lollipop update directly from Google. Android 5.0 Lollipop is initially coming on Motorola Nexus 6, HTC Nexus 9 and Google Nexus Player followed by other Nexus devices including LG Nexus 4, LG Nexus 5, ASUS Nexus 7 and Samsung Nexus 10. Android 5.0 Lollipop is also coming to several Google Play Edition devices in the coming weeks confirmed by Google.
How About Samsung And Sony?
Both Samsung and Sony are silent on which devices will receive Android 5.0 Lollipop and when will it be ready. So far, Samsung Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 are automatically eligible for a major update, which could be followed by Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 with other Galaxy devices released in the last 18 months.
But there are some Galaxy models likely moving on without Android 5.0 Lollipop updates. These devices include Galaxy S3 and all of its variants and Galaxy Note 2 due to the following conditions:
- Reached the 18 months end of life cycle.
- Already received at least two major updates such as Android Jelly Bean and Android KitKat within its life cycle.
- Hardware compatibility issues either reported on Android Jelly Bean or Android KitKat.
For users of Sony Xperia devices, there are some models which have reached the end of life cycle and it includes the Xperia Z series. Older Xperia Z series such as Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR and Xperia Tablet Z have received Android KitKat updates but the company never announced the future of these devices.
It is likely that Sony Mobile will prioritise the latest models such as Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact on the Android 5.0 L upgrade plans to be followed by Xperia Z2, Xperia Z1 Compact and Xperia Z2 Tablet. There are still other Xperia devices released recently eligible for a major software upgrade such as Xperia M2, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia T2 Ultra and more.
Manufacturers are waiting for Google to officially release the final version of Android 5.0 Lollipop. Once available, makers can begin integration of apps and services to the new OS with expected quick releases within the last few months of 2014 or early 2015.
