Android Key Lime Pie 5.0 is the much-awaited major iteration to the Android OS. The rumour mill suggests two smartphones will be unveiled by Google in its I/O event in May. Which device between Nexus 5 and Motorola X Phone will carry the new power OS?

The Google Nexus phone has been traditionally launched with the latest Android. But now that the tech giant is set to leverage its own Motorola unit, will there be changes ahead? Sleuthing Android fans admit scarcity of Key Lime Pie updates, but there is confidence in the community that the OS will be ready for introduction at the annual Google event.

Nexus 5 Under Negotiations: LG and Google Talking

LG's UK Product Manager Shaun Musgrave has confirmed to IBTimes UK that negotiations are under way between the Nexus 4 manufacturer and the internet giant. LG has apparently expressed to Google its interest in working on the next Nexus smartphone. That alone does not reconcile with previous rumors that hinted the Motorola X Phone will be the next Nexus device.

Meanwhile, many analysts are saying that Google will not launch a Nexus 5 in May. It is too early considering the November 2012 release of the Nexus 4. The release calendar would look even worse with the supply problems that Nexus 4 buyers had to go through until February this year. This gives the Motorola X Phone a better chance at launching Android Key Lime Pie 5.0.

Still, rumours come aplenty that LG is already working on a 5-inch Nexus 5 with the latest quad-core Snapdragon processor and a 13MP camera.

Google Exec: 'It's almost as if [Motorola is] a separate company'

Hiroshi Lockheimer, vice president of engineering for Android at Google, spoke late in February about the nature of Google's relationship with Motorola, which it bought in 2011.

"It's almost as if [Motorola is] a separate company," CNET.com quoted him as saying. "We treat all of our partners fairly," he said, as if assuring other tech firms. "Motorola we consider a partner just like HTC or Samsung."

That said, which "partner" would Google choose when the time has come to launch Android Key Lime Pie?
