Andy Murray Unlikely To Renew Sponsorship Deal With Adidas
British no. 1 Andy Murray will not likely renew his Adidas sponsorship deal at the end of this season. Murray's five-year contract with Adidas worth £15 million ends in December, and it is believed that his management is looking for a smaller brand that could focus on promoting the world no. 11, according to The Telegraph.
Just recently, Murray signed a £4.5 million deal with Standard Life, which means it is unlikely for other American sports apparel companies that hold complete advertising rights of their their athletes to sign him. As for the German sports wear brand, Adidas, it seems unwilling to increase its offer to the tennis superstar.
The Scot is currently in Beijing for the China Open where he recently advanced to the second round after his hard-fought win over Poland's Jerzy Janowicz 6-7 (11-9), 6-4, 6-2 on Lotus Court. Andy Murray will face the unseeded Argentine Pablo Cuevas next on Thursday and will play with the reigning US Open champion Marin Cilic in the quarter finals and Novak Djokovic in the semi-final if he progress that far.
Needless to say, Murray has endured a difficult season as his world ranking has fallen seven positions this year, and he has not won nor reached a Grand Slam final for the first time since 2009. But just recently, the 27-year-old managed to win his first singles title at the Shenzhen Open after Wimbledon last year.
"It's been a long time since I won a tournament," an emotional Murray said, according to BBC. "It was an emotional week for me. I managed to fight my way through it, win the title, and hopefully I can win another one before the end of the year."
Thus far, the Scot is vying to qualify for the ATP World Tour Finals in November, which only features the top eight world-ranked tennis players. Murray is now 105 points behind Czech Tomas Berdych, and his recent victory boosts his chances of getting into the tournament like Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer who are already qualified to join the season finale.
