Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt graced the red carpet in Sydney for the premiere of Jolie’s directorial film “Unbroken.” The power couple returned to Australia and stunned the fans and the media as they stepped out together for the first time as husband and wife.
The 39-year-old actress shot the film in New South Wales and Queensland from October 2013, so perhaps it’s just fitting that Australians would be the first to watch the war drama. “Unbroken” is based on the non-fiction book by Laura Hillenbrand, and tells the story of Olympic athlete-turned-war hero Louie Zamperini.
On Monday, Jolie walked the red carpet with the 50-year-old “Fury” star to answer press questions and take selfies with fans. Jolie wore a bespoke black and white lace Gucci gown and kept her hair in chignon, while Pitt donned a classic black suit.
The Academy Award winner also met “Australia’s Angelina Jolie,” Krystal Barter, who, like Jolie, had a double mastectomy operation after learning she was BCRA1 positive. Barter, 30, was personally greeted by Jolie and Pitt at the premiere.
“It was incredibly overwhelming. Angelina was absolutely humble and beautiful,” she told Daily Mail Australia of Jolie, who requested their meeting. “She chose inspirational Aussies to walk the red carpet with her (including burns survivor Turia Pitt). We’re incredibly honoured and she gave us the spotlight for a night to showcase what we stand for – it’s a testament to the type of person she was.”
Barter was one of the six inspiration Australians whom Jolie wanted to meet at the premiere. She was 22 when she found out she carried the BRCA1 gene, and was 25 when she underwent a preventative operation. She works with Pink Hope, an organisation in the country that aims to support women with hereditary breast and ovarian disease.
“Angelina is not only someone that a lot of people look up to, but she’s someone who has been through so much personally,” she praised the mother-of-six. “She spent quite a lot of time with all of us before the premiere... it is a moment I will always cherish and remember.”
“Unbroken” opens in Australian on January 15, and in New Zealand on the 22nd. It stars Jack O’Connell, Miyavi, Garrett Hudlund and Jai Courtney among many others.
