Anna Wintour Says VOGUE Would Be Boring WIthout Peple Like Kim Kardashian And Kanye West
Before Kim Kardashian's controversial nude Paper Magazine cover, made its rounds of the internet, She was first featured in another controversial magazine cover earlier this year. Kim's appearance with her husband Kanye West on the April issue of VOGUE magazine has been the source of a lot of criticism both for the couple and the magazine. For the first time ever, editor-in-chief Anna Wintour explains the reasons behind her decision.
"I think if we just remain deeply tasteful and just put deeply tasteful people on the cover, it would be a rather boring magazine!" said Wintour in an interview with former CNN correspondent Alina Cho. The interview was held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art where the Anna Wintour Costume Center is located. Fashionista.com shared some parts of the interview including Wintour's rationale behind the Kimye cover.
Wintour explained that it is very important that the magazine is talked about and what better way than to put the most talked about couple on the cover. Short of saying that Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are not "deeply tasteful," she kept things positive when she compared the entertainment power couple to another icon.
"The first celebrity that I put on the cover of Vogue was Madonna, and that was considered completely controversial at the time, too." she explained. She said that nobody remembers the uproar about the Madonna cover but the move generated a buzz much like Kimye on account of Madonna's image as a controversial figure. She stated further that the magazine should reflect what is going on in present day culture because at the end of the day, what's important is that the magazine gets talked about.
Kim Kardashian was very proud of the cover and even made an emotional announcement to her entire family on an episode of "Keeping Up With the Kardashians." Her sisters Kourtney and Khloe framed a blown up version of the cover and gave it to Kim as a present after Kim initially felt bad that her sisters didn't seem to see how much of a big deal landing the cover of VOGUE is to her.
