Another Australian couple is facing genital mutilation charges after they were accused of organising the illegal circumcision of their baby daughter in Bali.

The 44-year-old father and 42-year-old mother from Perth appeared on Wednesday before the Joondalup Magistrates Court after they were charged in September by the Child Abuse Squad for the genital mutilation procedure.

The couple were intercepted on Aug 17 at Perth Airport as they were about to leave for Indonesia for the female circumcision procedure. The procedure, although accepted in some cultures for religious or customary reasons especially in some Islamic communities, is banned in Australia.

Besides banning the procedure, Australian laws also prohibit arranging a female circumcision procedure or taking a child out of state for that purpose.

The couple was released on bail and is scheduled to appear on Dec 12 at the Perth Magistrates Court.

Last week, a Sydney-based couple who belongs to a small Islamic community faced similar charges before the Parramatta Local Court in New South Wales on similar charges. They denied the accusation.

Child Protection Minister Robyn McSweeney condemned the practise and push for an end to the procedure globally.

"While I can't comment specifically on this case, female circumcision is an abhorrent practise and one which is illegal in Western Australia. It is mutilation and should be stamped out worldwide," News.com.au quoted Ms McSweeney.
