Another Death Caused By Alcohol
Cruiser Killed An 18-Year Old Korean National in Sydney Harbour
An 18 Year Old Korean national was killed by a 12 meter cruiser in Sydney Harbor. The victim was with a group of friends when they decided to jump over the water and swim. Around 5:00 pm AEST, when the group is busy swimming and having fun, the boy with his friends came closer to the boat because of the windy conditions. But the boy was trapped under the boat when it tried to pick the swimmers up.
When the emergency team arrived, they found the Korean teenager seriously injured. The victim was immediately rushed to Royal North Shore Hospital but died after a couple of hours.
The police investigated the case and found out that the group was drinking alcohol before they swam. When they checked if the skipper was also under the influence of alcohol, the results showed that he was also over the legal blood-alcohol limit at that time.
The skipper’s breath test result was over 0.05 alcohol limit. "Slightly over the limit, but we are getting it double checked by taking a blood sample," says Mark Hutchings, NSW Police Force Superintendent. "And, again, the extent to which that is affecting this accident is still being investigated."
The boat was impounded by the police and will be used for more forensic examinations. Though the teenagers are all upset for what happened, they are willing to cooperate in the investigation process.
The Dangers of Alcohol
Alcohol is among the leading causes of preventable deaths all over the world. In fact, one in every ten deaths was caused by alcohol. These alcoholic drinks can be associated with chronic diseases like liver cancer, acute hepatitis, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, and many more.
But aside from those diseases, the main cause of alcohol deaths are those associated with driving. In different countries worldwide, people from different ages died because of this irresponsible act.
The average number of deaths on the road caused by alcohol in the U.S. is 45,000 every year from 1982 up to the present. And this is really alarming. Though the government implemented 2 main laws against driving under the influence of alcohol, the number of cases is continuously growing.
Drunk driving has been an old problem that people continuously experience. This carelessness often leads to serious damages and death not only for these drivers but also for some innocent lives.
Preventing Accidents Caused By Drunk Driving
Once life is lost, it can never be back. So it is important for someone to make an initiative in preventing accidents caused by drunk driving.
1. Don’t drink too much if you’re going to drive
Yes, we can never avoid that. But if you’re responsible enough, you should know when to stop. There are some alcohol breath tests available in some bars. Check and test before you hit the road.
2. Bring someone with you if you want to drink
If you want to drink your night away, that’s fine. Just make sure that you are with someone responsible who can drive you home.
3. Parents should keep an eye on their teens
They may look old enough, but you still need to keep an eye on your teens especially when they are drinking with friends. Never give them the car keys, instead pick them up.
