The hearing for the annual review for the potential release of Michael Alexander McGarry, a dangerous sex offender, was adjourned on Friday after he sought referral to a hormone specialist.

Mr McGarry wanted to resume the use of a drug that suppresses libido which Western Australia prison authorities used on sex offenders but stopped it because of the side effects of the drug such as osteoporosis and cardiac arrest.

Mr McGarry voluntarily stopped taking the drug in the earlier part of 2013, but wants to resume taking it after a few months.

However, Justice Stephen Hall warned the sex offender that even if he would be allowed to continue taking the drug to make him less horny, it would not necessarily lead to his release. The judge reset the hearing in October.

Taking the drug was a factor in permitting the release of other sex offenders until the Department of Corrective Services stopped the prescription of Androcur due to health risks. It is manufactured by Bayer Schering Pharma.

Mr McGarry is a convicted serial sex offender who has victimised young girls in the past.
