Last year AWPI formed an Alumni Fund that will accept donations and bequests with the idea it may support athletes that would otherwise be disadvantaged in not being able to represent a National team because of financial constraints.

The first donation was received from the family of the late Freddy Mayer.

Fred, a Hungarian immigrant to Australia in the 1950's, was a wonderful supporter of water polo in this country and knowing how much he loved the sport, both his sons, Sam and Robbie, made a donation so that the legacy of their father could live on.

Consequently the Grand Final of the men's National Water Polo League is now to be played for the "Fred Mayer Cup".

It was said that at one time Fred employed that many elite players that If F Mayer Imports put up a team they would have beaten the national side. He always had an open door to house players and was generous to the sport in life and remains so as a legacy, thanks to his sons to whom AWPI offers every gratitude.

"Fred's sentiments were " Everyone's a mate" and (while) Fred might not of played Water Polo at the highest level no one has achieved more pleasure playing, watching or talking about Water Polo," his son Sam Mayer said.

Now Australian Water Polo Inc. CEO Chris Harrison is delighted to announce that applications be received for the first round of funding in relation to the Mayer Foundation.

Purpose: To give an athlete the opportunity to fulfil their water polo ambitions without such financial assistance would not otherwise be possible.
