Castro was found dead just a little over one month after he pleaded guilty on July 27 to 937 criminal counts. Ariel Castro was serving a life sentence of more than 1,000 years for the heinous crimes he had committed. He kidnapped, held captive, raped and tortured Michelle Knight, Gina DeJesus and Amanda Berry for over 10 years.

When prison officials found Ariel hanging in his prison cell around 9:20 p.m., he was immediately taken to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction spokeswoman JoEllen Smith, said: "He was housed in protective custody which means he was in a cell by himself and rounds are required every 30 minutes at staggered intervals." Prosecutor Tim McGinty told the Cleveland court after Castro was sentenced : "This man deserves as many years and as much punishment as this court can give him."

Details of the case are as follows:

  1. Castro pleaded guilty last month to kidnap, rape, and torture of three women
  2. Castro's victims were Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight
  3. Castro was checked on every 30 minutes by guards
  4. Castro was taken off suicide watch in June
