The Houston Rockets have waived veteran center Marcus Camby, while forward Danny Granger will miss time for the Indiana Pacers to start the new season set to start on Wednesday. Over in Canada, two high-flying wingmen in Demar DeRozan and Rudy Gay were named team captains for the Toronto Raptors.

Houston Rockets - Camby Cut

According to Jonathan Feigen of Ultimate Rockets, the Rockets are cutting Camby because of injury issues (torn plantar fascia tissue).

It is a setback for the 39-year-old big man who has had a 17-year NBA career so far, although Camby has no intention of retiring as of yet and will try to make a comeback from the injury which caused him to miss all of Houston’s preseason games.

The move has a minor effect on the Rockets on and off the court. While Camby has a one-year fully guaranteed contract worth around $1.4 million, Houston has a deep front court with the offseason acquisition of Dwight Howard. They also have another big in Omer Asik who will play as the primary back-up center and even alongside Howard.

Rick Kaplan, who is Camby’s agent, also mentioned that his ward will consider remaining with the Rockets and serve as their big man’s coach.

Indiana Pacers – Granger to Miss More Time

Speaking of setbacks, Granger will miss about three weeks for the Indiana Pacers after another injury (strained left calf) in the preseason according to nba.com.

The disappointing development continues what was a frustrating 2012-2013 season for Granger who missed 77 of 82 regular season games in 2012. The new injury is a different one from last time when he suffered a tendon injury in his left knee.

Granger has career-averages of 18.1 points and 5.2 rebounds in eight years with the Pacers. However, Indiana has been successful even without him with the rise of star guard-forward Paul George. Other players who have overtaken him in the Pacers rotation are Lance Stephenson and offseason acquisition Chris Copeland.

Toronto Raptors – Team Captains Named

Meanwhile, at the Toronto Raptors camp, guard-forwards DeRozan and Gay and lead the Raps campaign in the upcoming 2013-2014 NBA season.

Erik Koreen of the National Post first tweeted about the news on Monday.

Something Dwane Casey said as an aside today: Rudy Gay and DeMar DeRozan are team captains.

The co-team captains are both known for their offensive prowess and high-flying antics. In the 2012-13 season, Gay averaged 17.6 points and 6.4 rebounds in 33 games while DeRozan logged in 14.8 and 3.9 in 82 games for the Raptors.
