The recent summer transfer window was pressure-packed as far as Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is concerned, but all turned out in his favour as he was able to land German sensation Mesut Ozil, with just thirty minutes before the window closed.

"The timing of the deal was linked to the Gareth Bale deal, but also all the other deals as well because Real Madrid bought Illarramendi and Isco in the summer," Wenger told arsenal.com.

Wenger said that the Gunners had a "big advantage" in obtaining Ozil's signature as he was able to speak with the latter before he could go on to sign with Real Madrid in 2010.

"I spoke to him back then on the phone, in the end he told me he wanted to go to Real Madrid, so I wished him well, but that first contact had been made," he added.

"He knew that I wanted him for a long time, and this was not the first time I tried to sign him."

For the first time in years, Arsenal has the financial capability to back up its desire to compete with the elite clubs in Europe, but the French manager still sticks to his principle of spending wisely.

"Now we are in a more comfortable financial position, I - more than anyone - want the great players to play for Arsenal Football Club. If we have to spend the money to do that, I will spend the money," he intimated.

The Gunners boss indirectly mocked Real Madrid's way squandering around their resources in buying players, when he was asked whether the fans could expect another big-name signings.

"If they are needed, then yes. If it's just for marketing reasons, then no. But for football reasons, why not?" Wenger answered wittily.

Madrid Club President Florentino Perez was once quoted as saying that players were brought into the Bernabeu not only for their talent but as well as their marketability.

Meanwhile, Wenger will still be in the hunt when the January transfer window opens and will look to add players of special talent to furthermore strengthen an already loaded Gunners squad.

"I don't rule it out. I don't rule it out at all, but saying that I don't want to encourage more speculation. We have just come out of a transfer market that has been very agitated, so let's not go into the next one today! I just want to focus on football now."
