Nick Mitzevich, from the University of Queensland Art Museum, is the new director of the Art Gallery of South Australia.

Former director Christopher Menz vacated the post because he said that the gallery receives too little funding.

Mitzevich said that he is very eager to make art known to younger South Australians.

"A great proportion of our visitors are under 25 so I would hope that I can bring that experience and certainly nurture and develop the younger people in the community to make the art gallery an important element in their daily lives," he said.

The 40-year-old director is confident that the gallery will be successful despite some budgetary restrictions.

"Money's always a problem and one needs to come up with great ideas and great ideas are the things that attract money," Mitzevich said.

"I look forward to turning a new chapter and bringing the government and the community with us."
