Asciano secures Anglo coal contract
Transport operator Asciano Group announced it has secured a contract that will add more than $775 million in revenue over a period of ten years with Anglo American Metallurgical Coal Pty.
Under the 10-year contract, Asciano Group will haul 16.5 million tonnes per year from Anglo American's German Creek facility and Moranbah North mine, beginning January 1, 2012.
Asciano will take on the 10.9 million tonne German Creek facility currently serviced by QR National and the 5.75 million tonnes Moranbah North mine currently hauled by Pacific National.
"The signing of this 10 year agreement will generate additional revenue of over $775 million," Asciano said in its statement to the ASX.
Asciano is a new entrant into the Queensland rail haulage industry. The hauling agreement makes Anglo American the largest contracted customer of Asciano in Queensland.
Asciano said it would add four new train sets to its fleet to service the additional volumes for Anglo American Coal.
Anglo American "has been extremely pleased with our performance since we began servicing their Moranbah North mine in mid-2009," said Rowsthorn. "The result is a performance based contract that not only matches the cargo assembly mode of the coal chain, but also provides Anglo American with the ability to mix and match its mine and port haulage requirements."
