ASUS surprised techies by launching the successor of the Padfone, only this time much bigger and better in many ways. And this bigger and better unit has powerful technologies inside it, from the processor and memory to camera and resolution shots. The new challenger in the Android smartphone war meets up with another powerful device, the LG Optimus G.

Physical Appearance

ASUS Padfone 2 has a dimension of 137.9 x 68.9 x 9mm and weighs 135g or 4.76oz, while LG Optimus G size is 131.9 x 68.9 x 8.5mm and it weighs 145g or 5.11oz, making the Padfone 2 much lighter while larger than the Optimus G.

Both smartphones have 4.7-inch screen display protected by Corning Gorilla Glass for enhanced screen durability and scratch resistance.

Display

The Padfone 2 has Super IPS + LCD Capacitive touchscreen with 16M coloirs. It has 720 x 1280 screen size or 4.7 inches with 312 ppi pixel density. On the other hand, Optimus G has True HD-IPS + LCD Capacitive touchscreen with 16M colours, has 768 x 1290 pixels or 4.7 inches with 318 ppi pixel density. Both supports multitouch capability, but LG Optimus G has its own UI made by the company.

The Optimus G has slightly higher ppi than the Padfone 2 and its UI v3.0 makes it slightly better with richer and smooth scrolling.

Sound

While it may not exactly matter to most users, both devices have built-in empowerment with their audio outputs.

The LG Optimus G has built-in Dolby mobile sound enhancement which is significant when listening to audio from different sources using headphones or clear speakers.

The ASUS Padfone 2 has the SonicMaster, which was once used with the PadFone station, producing immersive sound experiences. This same technology is being used by ASUS Notebooks today.

Platform, Processor, Memory

When it comes to the source of its power and function, both devices share the same OS, Android 4.0 or the Ice Cream Sandwich and both have been planned to obtain updates to go 4.1.1 or JellyBean. For the processor, both have Quad-core 1.5 GHz Krait, Qualcomm Snapdragon back up with Adreno 320. Even their RAMs are the same, 2GB of virtual memory. What is different are their storage capacities. The ASUS Padfone 2 has 16, 32 and 64 GB models, while the LG Optimus G has only a 32GB model. Both lack any card slot expansion.

Camera

Both smartphones have powerful camera and powered with different add-ons for great video and snapshots.

The LG Optimus G has 13 or 8MP camera (depending on which market it is available) with autofocus, LED flash, geo-tagging, face detection, and image stabilisation. It records video up to 1080p@30fps, and has LED video light.

The ASUS Padfone 2 has 13MP with autofocus, LED flash, geo-tagging, touch focus, and face detection. It records video as well with 1080p@30fps, but has no video light.

Both rear cameras of the two gadgets have 4032x3224 pixels at most. Both devices has front facing camera with 1.2MP for Padfone 2 and 1.3MP for Optimus G.

Something Special

Techies observe that generally, these two are nuts with their explosive specifications and will surely meet demands by common users, but there are some specs that break their commonality.

The ASUS Padfone 2 became even more powerful with its Padfone Station. Once attached, the station provides dock connectors for data, video, power and radio connections, speakers and SonicMaster feature for the audio output.

The LG Optimus G favours multi-tasking while offering video entertainment. It has the QSlide function which displays two functions on the same screen in transparent layers. This feature is discreet enough to let users send an e-mail or browse the web while watching a movie. This technology also works even when the device is connected to bigger screens using the Dual Screen Dual Play feature. Users could still check notes or e-mail with the smartphone discreetly without ruining the bigger screen output.
