The ATP World Tour Finals 2013 group stages will begin to play on Monday afternoon at the O2 Arena in London, and all eight contenders have their own reasons why they want to succeed in the ultimate ATP tournament of the season.

Rafael Nadal aims to officially confirm his status as world number one, and Novak Djokovic aims to pull off the improbable and steal it from the Spaniard. Meanwhile, Roger Federer calls it an “interesting tournament” and aspires to get back in discussion of being part of the tennis’ elite.

The other qualifiers—Tomas Berdych, Stanislas Wawrinka, Juan Martin Del Potro, Richard Gasquet and David Ferrer just want to slay a giant or two and finish off their respective ATP season with a bang.

Berdych from Czech Republic meets Stanislas Wawrinka to open the festivities in London, and Gasquet from France takes on Del Potro in the second match of the tournament.

For Gasquet and Berdych, being in the top eight is already an accomplishment, but the Frenchman and Czech aren't content with their respective successes this season.

“It was important for me to qualify this year. It was my goal at the start of the season. I’m proud to be there with all these great players. I will try my best to play well,” said Gasquet to the official Web site of the ATP World Tour Finals.

“When you step on court here at this arena, it’s one of the best feelings you can get on a tennis court. It’s very close to Centre Court in Wimbledon. This atmosphere is very special and unique. I really enjoy it,” said Berdych about playing at the O2 Arena in London and qualifying for the season-ending tournament.

Ferrer and Nadal, who faces each other Tuesday evening, are in Group A with Berdych and Wawrinka, while Djokovic and Federer, who start their campaign on Wednesday, are in Group B with Del Potro and Gasquet.

The ATP World Tour Finals has a round-robin format which means that each player are assured of at least three matches. The players play their groupmates once and the top two players in each group advance to the knockout semifinal round.
