Australian DJ Dee Dee Dunleavy has sparked outrage for seemingly punishing Nigella Lawson after her husband allegedly attacked her. Netizens said that the midday radio show host is "victimising the victim" when she suggested that Aussies should boycott the British celebrity cook until she learns not to "cower from a thug."

Writing on the radio station 3AW blog she titled "Nigella, we don't like to think of you cowering from a thug," the presenter urged Lawson to "make a stand on domestic violence" if she wants Australians to watch her shows.

"We don't like to think of you cowering from a thug. A man so boldly abusive he had no qualms about attacking you in public," she wrote, addressing Lawson.

"Nigella, like it or not, you're a beacon for women from all walks of life. If you want us to buy your books and watch your shows on how to run our kitchens, then we need you to make a stand on domestic violence."

Online citizens did not share the same sentiment as Dunleavy, though, with many of them expressing their outrage over the DJ's "bullying" tactic.

"The last thing Nigella needs is an uninformed media cretin commenting on how disappointed you are in her. Shame on you Dee Dee Dunleavy for victim shaming," Nic wrote on the blog's comment section.

"By your logic, you might as well tell a person who has just fallen and broken their leg to get up and run away. What were you thinking??? Your hope that Nigella will become a role model to others in this situation could have been communicated in a far more tactful way," user Georgia added.

"Because you buy her books and watch her TV shows does not mean she owes you or women in general anything. You bought the product - not the woman. Women don't need men for enemies when they've got other women," gerryK said.

Commenter Miriam said, "You show a lack of understanding of how women feel during abusive relationships. Survival and finding the strength to leave are the priorities and advocacy comes a long way down the track. Despite your obvious lack of knowledge on the subject you should have shown some compassion; better still don't provide opinion on things you obviously [have] no clue about. It's dangerous."

"The hardest thing a battered women (sic) can do is GET OUT OF THE SITUATION. Another radio personality has just been sacked for a lot less than your stupid comment. You deserve sacking," Sandra wrote.

"VICTIMS need support NOT more thuggery at the hands of Radio jerks (jocks). How dare you presume the higher moral ground. When will Australian radio clean up its act and image - it's a national disgrace that rubbish like this is allowed," another named Flavia Southwood said.

There are also a few who took Dunleavy's side, though.

"I support you Dee Dee I understand where you are coming from. Tolerating physical abuse does not send the right message to other women," Sue claimed.

A few hours after publishing her opinion and receiving "torrent of abuse" from the readers, Dunleavy has issued a statement that denies she was "bullying or victimising" Lawson.

The "Grubby & Dee Dee's Weekend Break" host cleared that she wasn't calling people to boycott Lawson's products, but insisted that she hopes the celeb kitchen diva would become a campaigner for domestic violence.

"First and foremost, my wish for Nigella Lawson is that she is safe and well, and as far away from her beastly husband as possible," the radio presenter said in a statement.

"The fact that I have copped a torrent of abuse today for urging her to take a stand against domestic violence pales into insignificance compared to what she must be going through.

She also told fellow 3AW presenter Neil Mitchell that she should "probably could have worded that better because a lot of people have misunderstood that I'm calling for a boycott of Nigella's books."
