Aussie: Italy ship confusion like Titanic"We Lost Everything"
An explanation appeared from a Perth man regarding his escape from an incapacitated cruise ship stranded off the coast of Italy.
Over 4000 people are on board the Costa Concordia which bumped on a reef last Friday night off the west coast of Italy that caused a huge cut in the hull. Robert Elcombe and his better half Tracy were among the victims who managed to get out from the ship.
Mr. Elcombe, 50, former resident in Britain who now stays in Perth, said they got into a lifeboat after the ship started to lean.
The staff explained that it was just a generator issue, which could be right away repaired. But when they went back inside, the ship began to tilt suddenly. It was so steep that many people started to flow down the corridor.
He tried to save some by grabbing hold of their hands. Everything seemed like what happened to the iconic shipwreck, the Titanic.
Mr. Elcombe lost everything he had in the ship (money, luggage, passports, etc.). Elcombe thinks he and his partner are still lucky for the second life given to them.
According to News Ltd, the couple stayed in their cabin after having dinner when a loud quake was suddenly heard and everything got thrown across the room.
People started to panic and scream. Many elderly got panic attacks according to Ms Gunn, 46, one of the survivors.
Everyone started to find ways to save themselves. There were even young men who prefer to save themselves without their girlfriends or wives.
The ship got stuck and tilted close to the small Giglio Island. One Peruvian crew staff and two French commuters got killed from the incident.
Around 3200 passengers including 23 Australians were rescued and are safe now according to the consular authorities.
Presently, the Italian authorities are looking into the factors involving the crash. Officers are investigating the incident and have already talked to the captain of the vessel.
