The mother of an 18-year-old student at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia, is protesting the school's requiring her daughter to appear topless in a play. The daughter, a creative arts student, was warned that she may not get lead roles in school stage productions if she is hesitant to shed of her clothes, at least her blouse off.

The mum said she is worried that topless photos of her daughter could be placed in social media sites even without her consent.

"I know they are young adults but they are still impressionable and they have no right to make our kids think that this is acceptable behaviour and they are typecast in the future for parts," ABC quoted the mother.

Besides partial nudity which she opposed, the mum said the play also had sexually explicit language and references to bestiality. She said the war-related play had very explicit sexual comments, which she found as not the proper vehicle for students to display their acting skill.

Julian Meyrick, a creative arts professor at the university, said the students are not forced to take roles they are not comfortable with and they are not penalised for their decisions.

"We do all sorts of plays and a very small proportion of them may involve threshold acts and a small proportion of those may involve semi-nudity. But it's certainly not a matter of course and we certainly don't insist on it," he explained to Nine News.

"It's not gratuitous nudity. We don't do it for the sake of it," the professor said.
