Aussie MPs Denounce ABC TV's "At Home with Julia" Sex Scene
Some Coalition MPs and senators are upset over a sex scene in the satirical ABC TV show "At Home With Julia" to be aired Wednesday, ABC News reports.
The satirical show will air a scene depicting Prime Minister Julia Gillard (actor Amanda Bishop) and her partner Tim Mathieson (Phil Lloyd) on the floor with their bodies covered by an Australian flag after having sex in her office.
The news outraged members of Parliament in a meeting Tuesday. MPs have also discussed a review of the ABC funding.
One MP described the scene as "sick," calling fellow MPs to make a statement on the satire.
"Having sex in the prime minister's office under the Australian flag is the last straw for me," the MP told the meeting.
"It is sick, I'm offended, and we should take a stand."
A Liberal party member agreed, saying the Coalition should look at ABC funding.
But one of their colleagues urged caution, saying if people did not like the show they could just turn it off.
ABC News reports none of the Coalition's frontbenchers spoke in the meeting room about the program.
Monarchists also opposed using the flag in the satire.
"I think a bit more discretion when using the flag is appropriate, even when you are trying to make a joke," Australians for Constitutional Monarchy head David Flint said.
Gillard herself reportedly laughed off the controversy over the scene in question. But a government protocol officer said the national flag should not have been shown lying on the ground, ABC News reports.
An ABC spokesman said Gillard had only been shown in a "very gentle, tender scene."
"If it's OK for others to drape themselves in our flag for all manner of occasions, I really don't see why it can't be draped over our prime minister as a symbol of love," the spokesman said.
